COUNCIL FOR EAST AND CENTRAL AFRICA FOOTBALL ASSOCIATIONS (CECAFA)
 
Officially, the organization was formed in 1973 with 5 founding members i.e.Kenya, Uganda,Tanzania,Somalia & Zanzibar.As for Zanzibar, they are still seeking to be recognized as a federation by the world governing body(FIFA)i.e.federation Internationale de football association.

CECAFA is also considered as the oldest sub-regional football organisation to be started in Africa.The headquarters of the organization as of now  is based in Nairobi, Kenya.

The organization as of now is headed by a president, of which he is elected by the member associations, on a rotational basis.The current President is Paul Weldehaimnot from Eritrea.

The members as of now, are 12 and they are;

  • Kenya
  • Uganda
  • Sudan
  • Zanzibar 
  • Ethiopia 
  • Rwanda
  • Burundi
  • Djibouti 
  • Eritrea
  • South Sudan 
  • Tanzania
  • Somalia.

COMPETITIONS

The organization has several competitions even before it became officially an organization. Some of the competitions which have been since it's inception, includes all tournaments of the age categories between ages15 UpTo the senior sides, both the male and female genders.The most popular been the `senior challenge cup, ' with Uganda as the defending champions for the men's side.

As for the Senior challenge cup, it started way back in 1927 as Gosage cup.Gosage was a company, which was owned by two brothers ( Lever Brother's).Under the title sponsors `Gosage', the tournament was hosted 37 times from 1926-1966, changing to East&Central Africa Senior Challenge cup between 1967-1971.

Then in 2005, another transformation happened, where a Saudi- Ethiopian businessman i.e. Mohammed Al Amoudi, sponsored the tournament, thus been renamed Al Amoudi Senior Challenge cup.

As of now, the tournament is known as the Kagame cup.In the cecafa region, the highest ranked team is Uganda in both African and FIFA chart.The region had also made some significant achievements such as, hosting the 2025 African Nations Championships, co- hosted by Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania. Preparations are also going on for the African cup of nations, which is set to take place next year as from the months of June and July.
